Netflix’s Forever, Mara Brock Akil’s contemporary reimagining of Judy Blume’s classic novel, captured hearts when it arrived on the streamer in May — 50 years after the book first hit shelves. Now, with Season 1 wrapped and a renewal already in hand, Akil is giving fans a very small taste of what’s to come for Keisha (Lovie Simone) and Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.) in Season 2.

Speaking with Deadline, Akil reflected on what drew her to adapt Blume’s story, which had faced 17 bans over the years. “Most banned books are banned because they’re truth-telling,” she said. “Judy Blume dared 50 years ago to tell young people the truth by anchoring a narrative on their very human curiosity and exploration. That core principle of truth-telling guided my adaptation.” While Akil’s version updates the story to a new generation in sunny 2018 Los Angeles, the essence remains: exploring first love, self-discovery, and the universal challenges of growing up.

Season 1 introduced Keisha and Justin, two teens who knew each other in preschool but had lost touch until a New Year’s Eve reunion reignites a whirlwind first romance. Over eight episodes, they navigate miscommunication, family expectations, and the pressures of being Black teenagers in predominately white spaces — all while learning the importance of self-love. By the finale, the pair part ways to find their own paths, leaving fans hopeful for a reunion.

Akil says she’s hard at work in the writers’ room, but she’s keeping details tight. “I’m excited about not revealing too much about where we’re headed for Season 2 until it’s time to. I’ve been cooking in the kitchen, as the kids say… I want to serve you the best meal,” she teased. One thing she did confirm: Keisha and Justin will remain at the center of the story. “We will be following Justin and Keisha, as opposed to moving to a new couple. I think we have more to say with them before we pivot in a new direction.”

The show has already proven its appeal. Netflix’s January–June 2025 engagement report shows Forever racking up 124.2 million total hours viewed across 19.1 million views, with audiobook listens spiking 259% globally after the series premiered.

Simone and Cooper Jr. bring the lead couple to life with chemistry that’s been praised from day one. Supporting them are Karen Pittman and Wood Harris as Justin’s parents, Xosha Roquemore as Keisha’s mother, Marvin Lawrence Winans III as Justin’s younger brother, Barry Shabaka Henley as Keisha’s grandfather, and a strong ensemble including Ali Gallo, Niles Fitch, Paigion Walker, and E’myri Crutchfield.

Brock Akil calls Season 2 a “love letter back to the people who said, ‘Yes, this is for me.’ We’re honored, we’re excited, and we’re ready to go even deeper. Thank you to Netflix — Season 2 is coming soon!”

While fans will have to wait for the next chapter of Keisha and Justin’s story, the creator’s words hint at growth, challenges, and the tender, complicated journey of first love that made Forever resonate in the first place.
